PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough)

(Important caution: Common sense dictates the need for genuine care in dealing with whooping cough or any serious illness.  Consult a physician before proceeding with these, or any other self-care approaches.)

Whooping cough responds well to absolute saturation therapy with ascorbic acid or sodium ascorbate vitamin C. Vitamin C must be given every 10 to 15 minutes that the patient is awake in sufficient quantity to produce "bowel tolerance" (loose stool). The quantity given orally may exceed 1000 mg vitamin C per kilogram body weight per day.  Small amounts will not produce results.

IF YOU READ ONLY ONE ARTICLE ON WHOOPING COUGH, THIS SHOULD BE THE ONE:
http://www.doctoryourself.com/VitC_WhoopingCough.pdf

It is authored by Susan Humphries, MD, a board-certified specialist in both nephrology and internal medicine.

Specifics on high-dose vitamin C therapy will be found at:

Antibiotics, cough medicines and medical therapy in general are nearly insignificant in pertussis (Merck Manual, 14th ed., 1982, pp 1897-1899) and no specific allopathic treatment is known except vaccination.  Vaccination for pertussis has carried one of the highest risks of dangerous side effects of any childhood shot.  (References: Vaccinations: The Rest of the Story (Mothering Books, 1993); Jeffrey Migdow, M.D. in Kripalu Yoga Quest, Fall/Winter 1982, p. 23; Michael D'Antorrio in Family Weekly, August 15, 1982, pp 10-13. If you thought what I said above was rather unusual, you will really like this next section:

Samuel Hahnemann, M.D., the founder of homeopathic medicine, successfully treated pertussis with one single dose of Drosera rotundifulia in the thirtieth centessimal (30C) potency. (Wm. Boericke, M.D. Materia Medica, 9th Edition, pp 258-259).  Do not administer a homeopathic remedy concurrently with other medicine or its effectiveness will be reduced.  No harm to the patient would occur even if carelessly administered: this is an attractive aspect of homeopathy. You may want to read up on it.

A Very Brief Therapeutic Outline for Whooping Cough:
Vitamins: C, as ascorbic acid or ascorbate, to absolute saturation; double optimum levels of other vitamins.

Minerals: Trace mineral supplementation and, if the patient is very ill, ask the doctor for recommendations for an electrolyte solution. Along with it. I’d personally use calcium-magnesium (1,000 mg Ca/600 mg Mg for an adult, 1/2 that for child over 5; 1/4 to 1/3 that for child 4 and under adjusted by body weight as necessary.

Diet: Light. Feed fresh fruit juices and fresh fruit for duration of illness and 3 to 5 days after. Nursing babies continue on breast milk only, plus vitamins, especially C.

General care: Bed rest as necessary. Keep in contact with your doctor.

Cautions: With babies and very young children oxygen may have to be administered and special care taken to prevent asphyxiation.  Parents who choose not to immunize for personal medical and/or religious reasons may come under considerable pressure from health authorities.

Vitamin C given by IV infusion is fastest acting.  IM injections are next quickest; aggressive oral C therapy is still the preferred method unless hospitalized, in which case IV or IM may be demanded by the patient, parent or guardian. "Demand" is certainly the right word.

Homeopathy: Drosera 30C, one dose sublingually.

Prevention: Optimum levels of all vitamins and fresh, wholesome, balanced vegetarian diet; plenty of rest, aggressive C therapy at the first sign of cold, flu or other related predisposing illness.

Outlook: Very good, but do not take any chances.

Adjunctive chiropractic or osteopathic treatment, particularly to the thoracic vertebrae, may help. Acupressure and massage are additional beneficial options.
