Do-It-Yourself Fast-Food Analysis

Fast-Food Vitamins?
Home

“You mean we have to do HOMEWORK?”

(It is difficult to achieve even the lowly US RDA's of important nutrients from a fast-food meal...unless you eat many portions... in which case you get fat! This exercise helps demonstrate this dilemma to my Nutrition students. No, you do not have to hand it in.)

You are to create FOUR "balanced" meals (two lunches and two suppers) from the menu of a national fast-food restaurant chain, such as Arby's, McDonald's, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, or Taco Bell.

You will be using the food composition tables in any standard nutrition textbook. You are specifically required to achieve the US RDA of the four following nutrients, plus fiber:

Vitamin E;  Magnesium;  Folic Acid;  Pyridoxine (vitamin B-6);  Fiber

You may achieve your objective with as many portions of foods as you need to, as long as you specify how many portions it took to get the RDA levels for EACH of the five specified nutrients at each meal. You many use any foods on the company's menu, and only those foods.  You are encouraged to present your results in chart or graph form if you can.

Type or computer-print this report up as a lab, with the usual headings listed on your lab report guide sheet. You may modify the format as you go, within reason.

In your conclusion section, be sure to thoroughly demonstrate to me that you understand what you have done.  If you want a good grade, you will want to be sure to discuss your results in detail.

If you absolutely cannot achieve an RDA level of a nutrient, EXPLAIN fully what is going on. Account for oddball outcomes!

PAY VERY, VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO DECIMAL POINTS AND UNITS (mg, IU, etc.).  WHEN YOU ADD UP YOUR FOODS, THE UNITS MUST BE CONSISTENT and the arithmetic must be accurate!!

Estimated report length: 3 pages typed, not counting your cover sheet.
